Chocolate-Covered Candied Orange Peels

by emily on 04/26/2011

When I went home for Christmas with David, my mom passed around a box of chocolate-covered candied orange peels.  The were absolutely DELICIOUS!

A blogger that I (and everyone else, apparently) follows, Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere, made her own a few weeks back and I vowed to give it a try.

I went off of a recipe from Giada at Food Network, but made a few changes.

Chocolate-Covered Candied Orange Peels

  • 3 Naval Oranges
  • Water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (we used semi-sweet)
  1. Start by scoring and peeling your oranges.  Giada says to use a veggie peeler, but that woman must have the strength of 10,000 men.  I used a paring knife and peeled the skin off in slices.
  2. Next, put them in a heavy pot and cover with water.  Boil for 10 minutes, drain, and run under cool water. Repeat.
  3. Lay your peels out on some paper towels to dry.  With a spoon, scrape away the pith, which should be pretty soggy by now.
  4. In another pot, put 1 cup of sugar and two cups water.  Boil until the simple syrup turns clear. When the syrup is clear, CAREFULLY add the peels and then boil the mixture until ALL of the syrup is absorbed.
  5. With tongs, remove the candied peels and put on parchment paper to cool.  Don’t touch the hot peels.

6.  When the peels are cool, melt some chocolate in a double boiler, then dip in the peels.  Place on more parchment paper and chill in the fridge ’til solid!

I took the fruit and covered that in chocolate, too!

Interesting. My boyfriend’s grandmother always makes those for Christmas, without the chocolate. They’re always on the Christmas cookie tray and that’s where they usually stay. I guess we’re more of a “flour and butter” sweets sort of family.

these are a big depart for my sweet tooth. i generally dislike any sweet that involves fruit– i’m a total chocolate and whipped cream kind of kid. but they just looked so pretty, i had to make them!

They look so pretty! My mom always has one of those ‘whack and pull apart’ orange flavored chocolate balls. That sounds weird, so here’s a picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry's_Chocolate_Orange

they’re sooooo yummy.
