Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats

by emily on 01/29/2012

So, David and I are on a diet right now (too many brownies, I think) so we decided it was time that the dogs got a sweet home-made treat!

I searched for a simple dog cookie recipe, and found one on AllRecipes.com, which I adapted slightly. (Margo loves her peanut butter, so I added more than the recipe called for!)

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Water
  1. Pre-heat oven to 350*
  2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.  If the dough is too thick to work, add a little bit of water at a time.  But bear in mind that the dough should be very thick and dry
  3. In between layers of parchment paper, roll the dough to 1/2″ thick.  Then, using a cookie cutter, cut your dough.
  4. Bake on parchment for 35 minutes, or until hard and done.
I had an entire army of squirrels in the oven!
Of course I chose squirrels, because the dogs love chasing squirrels up trees.
The best part about this dough is that it doesn’t have a leavening agent in it, so the details of your cookie shape stay sharp.
This is the squirrel shape, uncooked.
And this is how they look cooked!
David took a nibble of the cookies (obviously, these are human-safe, and even vegetarian!) and he said they were good, just not sweet.
The dogs, on the other hand, gobbled them up.  Here’s a video of them doing tricks for treats!

Pumpkin is totally dog safe, and the unbleached, whole wheat flour is safe for the pupperses, too.  I also used my stash of all-natural, organic peanut butter, so this would be doggie friendly, to the extreme.

Have you ever made homemade dog treats?

the color is just lovely on them! i’m happy they kept the detail of the shape, too. i once made turkey-shaped sugar cookies that turned into a funny blob. i fell like there is a lot of joy in oddly-shaped dog treats!

I love that you made these shaped like squirrels! What dog doesn’t dream of eating a tasty peanut butter and pumpkin flavored squirrel? You have very well behaved dogs!

it took a lot of work, but they do generally listen to commands. the only thing we can’t stop is the chow chow woofing at people who walk by the house. it’s sort of genetic in her.

These look so yummy. Our Dearly Departed would have loved them; especially since I’m making our peanut butter now. ;)
