Embracing the Weird & Decorating Shelves

by emily on 06/15/2011

You remember when I was up in Napa?

While I was there to, essentially, wrangle some wine and food celebrities and hob knob with some damn wealthy folk, I decided to take a few photos of this incredibly damp robin.

When I was done snapping the incredibly vivid little vista, I looked up from my camera… to see other PR people, celebrity chefs, and my boss staring at me like I was the biggest goddamn freak in the world.

Emily’s Weird Fact #1: I am OBSESSED with animals.  I want to learn about them, watch them, and (most of all) save them.  I’ve almost driven my car off of cliffs on Sunset Boulevard while watching frigate birds dive into the Pacific hunting for fish.  I go hiking and do nothing but watch lizards.  I am way more interested in a hungry songbird than some chef.

I’ve been feeling a little glum lately, because while I used to let my freak flag fly nice n’ high, I’ve sort of lost my weird.

Being an adult kind of sucks sometimes, you know?  But I’m trying to recapture it, little by little.

For a while, we had empty wine crate shelves in the bedroom.

Now, she lives here:

She’s a forgotten robot.

I’m pretty proud of how we’ve decorated our shelves in the bedroom, actually.  I grabbed a lot of our blue and green books from the living room shelves and popped them in for some tonal color:

Three Joan Didion novels, Herman Hesse, Sarah Vowell, and a Scribner anthology of short stories.

Who lives in this house, a freaking writer?

Emily Weird Fact #2:  The first time I got published (in a collection of stories by Connecticut student writers), I was 13.  Since then, I’ve been published pretty consistently in anthologies, collections, and magazines.  As an adult, I’ve never earned a living by doing *anything* but writing.  It’s just…what I do.

David also purchased these antique bottles on etsy, and I nabbed this green hourglass from CB2, courtesy a gift card from my bestie…

Emily Weird Fact #3: My parents have always lived in houses so old, you find these antique bottles in the yard whenever you garden.  No landfills or dumps to speak of way back in the early 1900s, I guess they just tossed ‘em into a pile in the backyard.  My dad actually ventured into the swamp behind their current 1790s farmhouse recently and found a Model T rusting in a pond.  It boggles my mind that we had to *buy* these bottles.

But I think my new favorite home addition is this:

Damn straight.

Whoa, the first thing that caught my eye was definitely the deep green of the very first pic. It took me awhile to tear my eyes away from it and get to the rest of the post because it was just SO BEAUTIFULLY VIBRANT! I am so jealous of your lawn if it is really honestly that lush.

I thought I was the only person who dug up “artifacts” in my yard from time to time! My house was built in 1922, but it’s in an area with far older homes, so I guess that’s why!

“I’ve never earned a living by doing *anything* but writing.” Damn. That’s intimidating/impressive.

more that i’m both lucky and copywriting is pretty grossly unappealing to a lot of people.

Very interesting about the bottles. I bet you could sell them on Ebay–people pay $$ for those things!

I had to read Siddhartha in high school… loved that book. And I also take waaay to many pictures of random animals. I have about 30 pictures of random birds at Sea World (10 of those were pictures of one bird EATING another bird… the HORROR! It was shocking to say the least) and zero pictures of the humans that I went there with. Oh well.

Weird girls UNITE!!

just cause we’re growing up doesn’t mean you have to let the weird go. (i wouldn’t consider you all that weird … you and i have a lot in common, from being obsessed with wayward animals to wicked old new england stuff.)

in fact, i think that’s part of what i love about you the most – the fact that you’re still YOU, and unafraid to be so. it shows strength, determination, resolve, et al.

so if you’re weird, and i’m weird, i’d hate to be normal! xo
