Wall Colors- The Grey Lady

by emily on 02/16/2011

We did it! We did it!  Finally, we did it!

So, as I’ve mentioned, our bedroom walls were a bit oppressive.

Case in point, this photo:

Spotlights a-blazin’, taken with the curtains off the French doors, and it till looks shadow-y.  I love the tone of that blue color, and I’d love to use it as a nice, dusty accent, but it was just too dark for our walls.

So, Saturday we upped to Home Depot, paint swatches in hand.

Of our previous swatch photo, one was really calling out to us:

That’s Behr’s color “Billowy Down.”  I loved the one underneath that, “Full Moon,” but we concluded that it, too, might be too dark for the lack of sun we normally get in the room.

We got two gallons of that new Behr Ultra Premium Paint & Primer in One.  Two gallons for $65.  Not cheap, really, and it was a weird and unfriendly consistency.  If we hadn’t been covering up a really dark color, it would have been an unnecessary purchase, because the room needed two coats regardless.

Also, as David put it, “This ain’t low VOC.”  Even with the doors and windows open, we were pretty stoned by hour two.  I wouldn’t get it again.

We taped and painted, and this is what we’ve ended up with so far!

I can see the ceiling again!  It’s not lost in an abyss!

Gotta paint that door when I get a chance.  Colorblind landlord strikes again!

So bright!  My donkey looks very happy on his perch now.

I love these colors that are just a shade or two off from white, but not pastel.  They’re so soothing, and it really helps up the beach appeal of our little abode.  We’re three miles from the Pacific, but it can’t hurt to bring the feeling in.

A few things that have to change:

  • The white curtains
  • The black chair (I’ve got a plan for him)
  • The empty walls
  • The off-white trim and door
  • The duvet cover

But this is such a giant leap forward for our little beach house!

When I was little, instead of asking me what I did that day, my dad would ask what I had accomplished that day.

This is my favorite accomplishment in a while!

What’s your most recent triumph?

Oh I am so jealous! We have been talking about painting out bedroom for ages. A shade of grey no less. But now Mister wants to rip out the ceiling so the paint will have to wait and wait and wait. Someday I will feel triumph like you.

i’m seriously digging the grey! nice and soothing.
but ripping out the ceiling? that doesn’t strike me as a one-day job. how long will you be sans ceiling?

That depends on how long it would take the contractor to replace it. We’re just starting to consider our options. Right now it’s covered in a knotty pine tongue and groove that Mister hates. It would be a major P.I.T.A. to paint, so we’d like to replace it with drywall, but then got to thinking since we (the contractor) would be ripping it out, perhaps it would be nice to leave it out. Vault the ceiling. We’ll see.

It’s definitely a project for this summer when the windows can be open and I can be outside to avoid the mess.
